I'm curious to see why people carry their knives. Do you have specific jobs that you regularly use your knife to accomplish, or do you carry it mostly for those "just in case" situations? Along those lines, how does the environment you're anticipating being in affect the knife you choose to carry? Also, does the company you'll keep affect blade choice (i.e. girl friends, wives, children, etc.)?

When I'm at work, I carry my Cat because its inconspicuous, fairly classy, and I don't need much blade to cut tape on boxes or the other tasks I require of my knife in the office. On the other hand, if I know I'm going to be going someplace where the quality of person I'll encounter will possibly be less than what I trust, I'll carry my wave'd Endura or CRKT M16 13SFG which has a comparable blade length, and some nasty serrations, in case the situation calls for harsh action.
If I'm going out alone, I'm not generally concerned with the knife I have, as long as I have one. If it comes down to self defense, I'm not against beatin' feet if I'm alone, and most emergency cutting jobs will, imo, be accomplished equally by just about any knife as long as its sharp. On the other hand, if I'm going out with my girlfriend, you'll definitely find me carrying my USN Endura, CRKT M16, or both, in some situations. I'm not sure if I could explain the logic of carrying both, but I'm a bit over-protective and I feel more prepared when I've got two blades on me.
i understand why you would carry two blades, a back up is allways nice. But if yuo get cuaght by police for any reason its better to have two knives with diffrent blades, eg. 1 serrated and 1 plain, its easier to explain that your not using the blades solely for harm ;)

Ill give you my own stand point on these questions as soon as i get home.

Well I have a bg-42 Millie with polished scales if I need a classy knife! All joking aside I carry larger knives not for self defense use, but because I hate not having a knife big enough to do multiple jobs.I usually always carry a Kimber .45 when the law allows (I have a CCL).The only time I personally would use a knife in a self defense situation would be as a last ditch weapon( I lack the training). If it was legal to carry a tomahawk that would be my edged weapon of choice!
I hear ya, Jim. I'm certainly unqualified as a knife fighter, but I feel like 3 3/4" of steel's factor as a force multiplier is help enough to justify carrying it with defense in mind.
Unfortunately, here in Illinois, it isn't even possible to get a CCL, so my Sig P226 Elite has to stay in the safe when I'm out and about...
Man that sucks. Way too many stupid gun laws in this country.
I couldn't agree more.
Nothing tells you the government's head is too big for its shoulders like when it tells you how you can or can't choose to defend yourself.

Honestly I just love knives. I have always been fascinated with them even when I was little. I would whittle sticks down into little spears, try to put an "edge" onto longer sticks to make swords... LOL When I got my first real pocket knife I was hooked. I loved having it just knowing if I needed it to use it was there. Also for a self defense standpoint its just extra piece of mind. I do use them daily though, whether I am at work cutting open boxes, letters, packages etc, or even using them to prepare or cut food. (Terzuola slippie works perfect) I have been carrying my Bob T. ever since I have gotten it. That's almost 3 months. I usually pair it up with a millie or a se blade. Usually just something a little larger. I always carry 2 knives at least. Sometimes 3.
I do anticipate what knife would benefit me most that day. My girlfriend is supportive of my hobby and in fact is the one who bought my my Bob T. Slippie. So I find it easier that she accepts that, as well as most of my friends are knife nuts. So the only time I am careful about not bringing my millie or a larger blade is when I go to class, or an event like a concert etc...
For me, I think there a damn useful tool, and they are something cool you can collect and use, and not feel bad about it since that's what they were made to do.
Great post Caleb!

I carry solely for the reason of safety. I like a knife with a handle long and skinny enough in case I need to use it in a situation where the other person may not have a weapon but still may be a threat. Thankfully I never had to use it, but it gives me a sense of security knowing I have it. I carry the same knife in all settings, but I usually change my EDC every 4-6 weeks when I get a new knife. Some knives take a little while to get used to. My current favorite is the Emerson CQC 7 mini that I posted pics of recently. I can't see myself carrying anything else in the near future, but I have said that many times before with other knives.
AS I TOLD THE ELDERLY GENT I PURCHASED MY MICROTECH ULTRATECH FROM AT A SMALL TOWN OREGON GUN SHOW: "I DON'T WANT TO HURT ANYONE; I JUST WANT TO IMPRESS MY FRIENDS WHEN I OPEN MY MAIL!" LAST WEEK, I RECEIVED THE NEW DAYTONA S30V AND IT OPENS MY MAIL EVEN BETTER; AND EVEN HAS A GLASS BREAKER TIP ON THE BUTT END WHICH SECURES THE REVERSIBLE STAINLESS POCKET CLIP! MY WIFE CARRIES AN ASSISTED OPENING BUCK RUSH ATS34 NEXT TO HER SEECAMP .32ACP LOADED WITH WINCHESTER SILVERTIP HOLLOW POINTS IN THE BEAUTIFUL 2 TONE BROWN ALLIGATOR PRINT GALCO CONCEALED CARRY PURSE I GAVE HER LAST VALENTINES DAY! WE ARE BOTH CWP LICENSED IN WASHINGTON STATE.

WHEN WE ARE OUT BALLROOM/SWING DANCING, I CARRY THE NEW WM HENRY 2 1/2" BUTTON LOCK WITH INTERIOR WOOLY MAMMOTH INLAYS MADE EXCLUSIVELY FOR AG RUSSELL. WHEN IN MY CARHART JEANS, SHORTS, OR OVERALLS, I CARRY A REAL KNIFE LIKE THE SPYDERCO MANIX II!
I carry a knife most of the time. At work I use it to cut plastic and open boxes. At home I carry just in case I need it. The only thing that limits what I carry is the law.
i carry because i can. ive carried a knife since i was in the third or fourth grade, back when it was ok to bring a knife to school to cut a sandwich or spread some pb on a cracker. i feel naked without some kind of blade on me. i usually cerry two if not three knives on me all the time. i keep a delica-4 pe in my right front pocket, another smaller folder clipped to my left front pocket and a small neckknife. theres also a three inch fixed blade in my shouder bag along with a leatherman multitool. oh, and i forgot the sak on my keychain.
Ever notice that you become the go to guy when somebody needs a knife? I feel totally naked when I forget to put one on!! ( I try to carry my left and right knives at all times)
